Nomura to buy Lehman Brothers’ BPO in India
Nomura, Japan’s top brokerage group, has struck a deal to buy Asian Business units of Lehman Brothers for 225 million Dollars. These business units include those in Japan and Australia as well. It is being said that this deal would help Nomura scale up their operations to compete with its larger international rivals.
Nomura’s acquisition would include all of Lehman Brothers’ franchises in Asia-Pacific region including 3000 employees in multiple locations. Under the terms of transaction all employees in Asia-Pacific would be offered employment with Nomura. Majority of these employees are said to be in Tokyo.
According to Hindustan Times, this takeover would reportedly save about 175 jobs in India. Though, as of now, there is no final word on the future of Lehman’s BPO unit in Mumbai.
Times of India reports that this deal does not include Lehmans’ outsourcing facility in Powai, Mumbai. The Powai unit of Lehman Brothers’ (India) handles back-end operations of Lehman US and is said to come under the management of New York rather than Asia Pacific. Perhaps Barclays might come to the rescue in near future, since it acquired US operations of Lehman.
