Indian Institute of Technology – IITs in India
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), are a group of autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institutes of higher education in India. The students and alumni of IITs are generally referred to as IITians.
Mode of Admission
Undergraduate admissions to these Institutes is done through a Joint Entrance Examination, popularly known as IIT-JEE. Postgraduate Admissions are done through GATE (for M.Tech.), JMET, JAM (for M.Sc.) and CEED (for M.Des.). Admissions to Ph.D. program are primarily based on a personal interview, though written tests may also be a part of such admission process.
Since IITs are autonomous Institutes, they offer degrees in technology (B. Tech.) at the undergraduate level as opposed to the Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degrees awarded by most Indian universities.
